If you are planning on visiting Dunedin and you are someone who might enjoy a break from a fast-paced world of modern technology, you might consider a visit to our authentic Chinese Garden. It’s a place of cultural tradition, (apart from an abundance of concrete on display) and there is very much a feeling of something old and timeless about the garden.

The architecture is as genuine as it gets. I remember when our sister city of Shanghai sent expert builder/artisans here to construct the garden to traditional standards. The garden now stands almost unique in the world, one of only 2 authentic gardens outside of China. The garden earns its place celebrating our vibrant Chinese community, many of whom are descendants of miners who settled in Dunedin following the the Otago Gold Rush in the 1860’s.

I’m a fan of the garden for almost its complete lack of things to do. You can wander around the garden, take time to relax and maybe enjoy a cup of tea. But this is not a fun park or adventure playground, it has more in common with a stroll along the beach or a gentle bush walk.

So if you are in Dunedin and need a litle time just to chill and relax, this might just be for you.

Personally, I lean more toward visiting a local cafe for a strong coffee and a cheese scone, but each to their own. At the end of the day the Dunedin Chinese Garden is a wonderful place and adds something special to our city of Dunedin.
